Unclaimed Property

Bankers know how to handle customer funds that need to be escheated to the state, but do you know how to claims funds that are due you from an escheatable account?

All states require financial institutions, including brokerage firms and insurance companies, to report when personal property has been abandoned or unclaimed after a period of time specified by state law.  This could be anything from overpaid utilities, early termination of contracts, or a forgotten bank account.  By law, these funds are escheated, or turned over, to the Department of State Treasurer for safekeeping.  To determine whether any funds have been escheated to the state that belong to you, visit www.missingmoney.com.
